Local artist Danna Gabriel is creating a veteran memorial mural in Antigo and is calling on the community to help make it a reality.
The mural will be a large American flag made from 305 individually personalized ceramic tiles honoring local veterans. Tiles can feature veteran names, photographs, military information and personal messages.
The completed mural will be permanently displayed inside Bradley Funeral Home, thanks to Jessica Olson, who provided space for the project.
"This project is about honoring the people who served, preserving their stories and creating something our community can be proud of," Gabriel said.
The project also gives back to local veterans. Working with Randy Adair, Langlade County veterans service officer, Gabriel designated Disabled American Veterans, Langlade County Chapter #23, as the beneficiary. $15 from every tile sold will be donated to DAV to help support local veterans.
The mural cannot be completed until all 305 tiles are sold. To date, 32 tiles have been purchased, leaving 273 tiles still needed.
Community members can purchase a red tile for $65, a star tile for $75 or a white photo tile for $85. Tiles can be purchased in honor of a specific veteran or simply as a "Thank You for Your Service" tribute. Red tiles are particularly suited for text-only messages.
Bradley Funeral Home is also welcoming community members who would like to learn more about the project or need assistance ordering a tile.
Bradley Funeral Home is open Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.
