Rhinelander Man Seeking End To State Treasurer's Job

He's been the city's mayor, a well-known businessman, a movie actor, a member of the Oneida county board and now he would like to be your state Treasurer. Until, he says, the public  abolishes the job.

Rhinelander resident Jerry Shidell has made the statewide ballot this fall as the Libertarian Party candidate for state Treasurer. He gathered the required 2000 signatures to get on the ballot.

Libertarians like Shidell would like to see smaller government, and he says the Treasurer's job has little to do....

"....I noticed this job is really ridiculous. The person who occupies that position almost literally has nothing to do. It's time to get rid of that position. I decided as a Libertarian this is a way that I can effect in a small little manner a reduction in the overly intrusive government that we have...."

Shidell says after being elected, he would work to get a constitutional amendment to eliminate the job...

".....so my campaign theme for state Treasurer is 'hire me...then fire me!'...hire me for the job. I'll work my butt off to get the legislature to pass a low to eliminate the position. Then the voters can vote on a constitutional amendment then they can fire me...."

Shidell says voters will have a full slate of candidates including Governor and Lieutenant Governor, Secretary of State, Treasurer and Attorney General.

Legislatures for decades have debated whether to keep the Treasurer's job and Secretary of State position as the  duties largely have been farmed out to other agencies. They remain a part of the state Constitution and would need to be eliminated by a constitutional amendment vote.
