Northwoods Land Trust

Within the last month, the Northwoods Land Trust finalized an agreement to protect one of the biggest tracts of land in its history.

The descendants of Jacqueline Bassett donated a conservation easement on her 335-acre plot in Presque Isle that includes more than 11,000 acres of water frontage.

The easement means the land will be protected from development and lot division forever.

For part of the year, a gravel road reaches a remote piece of Vilas County land.

But in the winter, a mile-long snowshoe is the only way in.

Snow decorated an evergreen forest as Trisha Moore and Troy Walters reached their destination and greeted Bob Martini, who owns the 31 acres of wilderness northeast of Eagle River.

Forty years ago, he built an eight-sided cabin here by hand.

A state organization called an Eagle River man “instrumental” for his role in helping protect natural places in northern Wisconsin.

Gathering Waters, Wisconsin’s Alliance for Land Trusts, honored Bryan Pierce with its Harold “Bud” Jordahl Lifetime Achievement Award at a recent ceremony.

Pierce helped form the Northwoods Land Trust in 2001 and served as its executive director for 18 years.

Gathering Waters executive director Mike Carlson praised Pierce’s work for the area.

One of the largest donations to a land trust in Wisconsin history took place in the Northwoods last fall, and now you can get an up close view of it.

Last October, the Northwoods Land Trust in Eagle River announced a 4.4 mile stretch of shoreline and more than 400 acres of land were put into land trust by the Yawkee Lumber Company. It's believed to be the largest shoreline donation in state history from a monetary perspective. The shoreline is on Lake Katherine in the Town of Hazelhurst.

It was a memorable year for the Northwoods Land Trust, headquartered in Eagle River, as they seek to preserve tracts of land and waters for future generations.

It's their 18th year, and they will be holding their annual meeting June 21 from 4 to 6 p.m. at the Northwoods Center in downtown Eagle River. The public is invited.

Lake Katherine Association

One of the largest donations of conservation land to a Wisconsin land trust took place in October and will also preserve land along a well-known lake in Hazelhurst.

The Yawkey Lumber Company donated about 430 acres of woodlands, wetlands and wildlife habitat and about 4.4 miles of natural shoreline on Lake Katherine to the Northwoods Land Trust.

After designation to the trust, the land remains in conservation status in perpetuity.

The Northwoods Land Trust is inviting paddlers to canoe the Deerskin River in Vilas county and the Nicolet National Forest to see some great scenery and also see properties that have been preserved for the future.

They work with property owners, accepting conservation easements on property with natural or scenic resource values. After conservation easement is granted, the land trust provides long-term stewardship following the landowner's wishes.
