Thanksgiving travel, Wisconsin’s budget surplus, and the return of snowy owls
Airports and highways are expected be busy in the days around Thanksgiving, with AAA expecting travel to meet or exceed pre-pandemic levels. Then, Wisconsin’s projected state budget surplus is now forecast to hit nearly $6.6 billion by July. Governor Tony Evers will spend the next several months working on a budget to determine what to do with that money. Finally, snowy owls have been a bit slow to return to Wisconsin this year, partly due to a mild fall.

Record high campaign spending, teaching Ojibwe culture in public schools, and Wisconsin’s bear den survey
Outside special interest groups spent at least 50 percent more than the previous record high for Wisconsin’s midterm election this year, with the bulk of the spending going toward the governor’s race, according to the Wisconsin Democracy Campaign. Then, the Watersmeet Township School District is making a change this school year. It’s bringing Ojibwe culture and language into the classroom. Finally, researchers are gearing up to dive into bear dens. It’s to better understand the reproductive health of Wisconsin’s black bear population.

Aspirus Health warns people that respiratory illnesses are putting a strain on healthcare facilities nationally and locally, where some walk-in clinics report 70 percent of patients have respiratory symptoms. Then, the former Milwaukee Election Commission deputy director charged with fraudulently requesting military absentee ballots posted bond after her initial court appearance Friday. And a Nicolet College graduate has been named the 2022 Wisconsin Technical Alumni of the Year. Dentist Kricket Koehn is the first Nicolet graduate to receive the honor.

Wisconsin has a 173-year-old abortion ban that hasn't been enforced in decades. But if the U.S. Supreme Court strikes down the decision in Roe v. Wade, that law will trigger, criminalizing abortions in the state. Then, COVID oral antiviral medications are now widely available.
